Welcome to the first edition of the Memphis Pediatric Heart newsletter, The Heartbeat! Many of you know me well, but maybe not all. I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself and share what sets our practice apart for you and your patients.
About Dr. Stamps
My name is Kevin Stamps (although James is my first name). I am a Tennessee native, and completed both my undergraduate studies and medical school at the University of Tennessee, the latter at UT Health Sciences Center here in Memphis.
After completing my pediatric residency at UT/LeBonheur, I spent two valuable years as a general pediatrician at Memphis Children’s Clinic—an experience that gave me firsthand insight into what referring physicians need from a specialist partner. I then returned to UT/LeBonheur to complete my pediatric cardiology fellowship, followed by a six-month advanced fellowship in cardiac MRI at Boston Children’s Hospital. This fellowship was instrumental in helping our team establish the cardiac MRI program at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital. In 2012, I opened Memphis Pediatric Heart to provide cardiology care for all children in the Mid-South. After so many years here, I consider myself a true Memphian—and I’m proud to be part of this community. Outside of the office, you’ll find me cheering on the Tigers and the Grizzlies, staying loyal to my Tennessee Volunteers, and—thanks to my wife and her family—proudly flying the Ole Miss flag as an adoptive Rebel fan as well.
Our Commitment to Referring Physicians and Patients
I started Memphis Pediatric Heart for several reasons, but the common thread is this: as an independent practice, we can deliver the best clinical care more efficiently, more promptly, and with a higher level of service than typically expected. Our team is uniquely qualified…we have a registered nurse with over 20 years experience and two board-certified echocardiographers. Our echocardiography lab is certified by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC), which represents the highest national standard for quality. But, clinical excellence is only part of what we offer. We are equally committed to making every step of the process—from referral to evaluation to treatment plan—prompt, convenient, thorough, and easy. You can expect a consultation report within 48 hours of your patient’s visit (usually within 24 hr). And because we are not affiliated with any single institution, we have the freedom to refer patients wherever they will receive the best care for their specific needs, whether that’s locally or at a center elsewhere in the country.
Having practiced as a general pediatrician myself, I know firsthand how demanding it is to manage a broad diagnostic spectrum while staying alert to potential cardiac pathology. We are here to be a dependable resource for any patient who gives you pause—whether the concern is urgent or routine. You don’t need to be a pediatric cardiology expert. That’s exactly why we are here.
Rapid Access When It Matters Most
We understand that a pediatric cardiology concern rarely allows for a months-long wait. That’s why we are typically able to see new patients within 48 hours—and for urgent situations, same-day appointments are often available. When you have a patient who needs answers quickly, we are here.
Expert Care at a Fraction of the Hospital Cost
Our structure as an independent private practice allows us to operate more efficiently and provide services that are often less than 50% of the cost at a hospital-based practice.. Many families have insurance with high deductibles and high out-of-pocket cost, and therefore may pay a high percentage (if not all) of the bill for these tests. We believe families should never be surprised by a bill, so we provide transparent cost information before any visit. For those who need flexibility, we offer payment plans as well.
A Different Experience
We’ve put careful thought into the entire patient and family experience. We want the level of service they receive to be just as elevated as the clinical care they will receive. Our team prioritizes making this experience as efficient, simple, and non-intimidating as possible. It is this goal that drives everything from how we schedule appointments to how our space is designed. Our office space is designed to be calm, comfortable, and welcoming for our patients and their families, a little different maybe than your typical doctor’s office. Families often come to see us with some anxiety, so anything we can do to lessen that anxiety is helpful.
We welcome the opportunity to partner with you in caring for your youngest cardiac patients. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or to discuss a referral.
Warm regards,
J. Kevin Stamps, MD
